Morocco – Anniversary of the Independence Manifesto
On this day, 11 January 1944, the Proclamation of Independence of Morocco was signed. This date has since been marked as a holiday in Morocco. It is known as the Anniversary of the Independence Manifesto and is celebrated annually on 11 January. Today is an official government holiday in Morocco celebrated in the country and around the globe.
The purpose of the public proclamation was to free Morocco, that had been an independent state for 13 centuries, from Frances presence on the territory. The Manifesto demanded an end to colonialism and the right to Moroccan self-rule, among other demands. It was signed by 66 Moroccans including members of the former Nationalist Party and independent persons such as members of the resistance and national activists.
The Manifesto was presented to Sultan Muhammad V, who in the consequential struggle for independence became an important symbol of freedom. In 1956, the Franco-Moroccan Joint Declaration put an end to the French protectorate in Morocco. Allied with the Sultan, the Moroccan Nationalist Movement and the Moroccan people stood up to their oppressors and eventually gained their independence and became the Republic of Morocco.
