On this day, 12 January 1964, a great number of the black African population of Zanzibar revolted against the reigning Arab settlers. In 1964, Arabs had ruled the archipelago for over 200 years engaging in commerce with the “locals” but also, and most importantly, participating in the draconian slave trade of black Africans. At the time Tanzania was granted their independence from Britain, before Zanzibar and Tanzania’s union, Britain had Arabs remain the rulers of the islands despite them being an ethnic minority in the African territory. Gerrymandering done by the ZNP (the Arab dominating) prevented the black africans from truly governing their country. In Zanzibar and Arab ruled regions of the country black Africans were openly treated as second class citizens, for example, schools and basic social services like health care were purposefully withheld from black African regions.
The Zanzibar Revolution led by John Okello (a Ugandan member of the Afro-Shirazi Party) successfully over-through The Sultanate of Zanzibar. Though both sides committed many atrocities during the revolt Okello and his extremist followers tactics were ruthlessly violent. In the end The People’s Republic of Zanzibar was established with Abeid Amani Karume as the first president. Soon after John Okello was ejected from government as a Field Marshal and deported to Uganda.
