Comprehensive Peace Agreement Day in South Sudan
On this day, 9 January 2005, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed in Sudan. This accord was an important step towards ceasing conflict, and bringing peace to the warring nation of modern day South Sudan (pre-independence).
The Second Sudanese Civil War started in 1983; it was preceded by The First Sudanese Civil War (1955-1972) during which similar issues were fought over. The Comprehensive Peace Agreement or the Naivasha Agreement was signed by the Government of Sudan and Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) to put an end to the Second Sudanese Civil War. Incidentally, in the accord an agreement was made that a Southern Sudanese independence referendum would be held in 2011; and it did take place six years later.
Once the document was signed tensions remained between the SPLM and the government, mainly over natural resources and the ownership of the oil-rich Abyei region.
