Historical dates
Foundation of the African National Congress
On this day, 8 January 1912, the African National Congress was founded in Bloemfontein; two years following South Africa’s independence from Britain. The political party first known as the South African Native National Congress (SANNC) started as an organization focused on defending the rights of black people in white-ruled South Africa.
The early leaders of the African National Congress played a great role in putting an end to Apartheid. When racial segregation worsened in South Africa, the ANC took part in and led many actions in protest to the Apartheid regime. In 1951, the ANC introduced The Defiance Campaign against Unjust Laws; and from it came the never before seen mass mobilization of Africans and Asians. When banned from the government, The African National Congress went into exile and continued its operations from Zambia and Tanzania.
The African National Congress has governed South Africa since the country’s first post-apartheid elections in 1994; Nelson Mandela won and became the first black president of South Africa. Though, today the ANC faces criticism for allegations of corruption.
