Ancestry Day in Haiti
Today is Ancestry Day in Haiti. It is a public holiday celebrated annually on the 2nd of January. This day is dedicated to remembering the struggle and sacrifices Haiti’s founders and martyrs went through during the fight for emancipation from France. Haitians celebrate this holiday by attending state events, patriotic celebrations and sharing banquets, and savouring Joumou soup, the national dish of Haiti also part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list of UNESCO.
Toussaint L’Ouverture, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Henri Christophe were some of the most influential figures in the Haitian fight for freedom notably the Haitian Revolution.
In the picture on the upper left is Toussaint L’Ouverture who was the governor that proclaimed the colony of Saint-Domingue independent from France’s brutal rule. In the frame on the lower left is Henri Christophe or Henri 1er who was an important leader in the Haitian revolution and later the first and only monarch, being the king, of the Kingdom of Haiti. On the large image on the right is Jean-Jacques Dessalines who was also a great leader in the fight for the liberation of the nation of Haiti, he officially proclaimed the territory of modern day Haiti independent from France in 1804 when it became the Republic of Haiti.
