On this day, 26 February 1926, Carter Woodson started Negro History Week. The Negro Week was made to be celebrated every year during the second week of February, during which are the birth days of both Abraham Lincoln, who was the 16th president of the United States, and of Frederick Douglass who was an important American figure in the struggle for the emancipation of American enslaved people.
Since then Negro History Week has evolved into Black History Month, a celebration observed mainly in the United States and Canada.
