Today, 24 January 2023, is the International Day of Education. In 2018, The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 January as The International Day of Education; it is celebrated every year on the same date. The United Nations General Assembly states education as a human right, a public good and a public responsibility.
The International Day of Education celebrates the vital part education plays in the our communities and the world. Equitable education of quality becomes must be accessible to all who desire it. Such education brings peace among, and within, nations. Good education promotes sustainable development. And education brings the world near to reaching the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.
For instance, several African countries are on track to or have already abolished school fees in their schools. As each country made education accessible to all, primary school registrations dramatically increased.
In Ghana primary school registrations increased by 12%, in Kenya 18%, Ethiopia 23% and 51% in Malawi.
Gender equality will be reached and the cycle of poverty – affecting millions – broken as education becomes accessible and truly a public good. It is important to remember that making equitable education of quality accessible to all is a public responsibility. And that we each play a role.
