Today, 28 February 2023, is Independence Day in Egypt. It is a public holiday. It is celebrated every year on 28 February throughout the country.

The First Martyrs for Independence in Ghana
On this day, 28 February 1948, the unarmed Sergeant Cornelius Francis Adjetey and his comrades were shot dead by Britain’s colonial government for petitioning for the rights of Africans in the Gold Coast colony in present-day Ghana.
The murder of World War II veterans Sgt. Cornelius Francis Adjetey, Corporal Patrick Attipoe and Private Odartey Lamptey was in many was “the straw that broke the camel’s back” in the struggle for Ghanian independence. It lead to the 1948 Accra Riots and to the eventual independence of Ghana – nearly 10 years later – on 6 March 1957.
Today Adjetey, Attipoe and Lamptey are recognized as the first martyrs in the fight for independence from British colonialism in Ghana.

On this day, 28 February 1922, Egypt gained its independence from Britain.

Philip Emeagwali awarded the Gordon Bell Prize
On this day, 28 February 1990, Philip Emeagwali was awarded the Gordon Bell Prize for solving one of the twenty most difficult problems in supercomputing.
